Jonathan Davies introduces Wales' six best games from the 80s - a compilation of some of Welsh rugby's greatest ever victories with a bonus of Wales' great 25-20 comeback in 1988, with the superb Ieuan Evans try, thought to be his best in a Welsh jersey. 20th Apr 1985 - Wales 24 England 15, Cardiff Arms Park England full-back Chris Martin is still probably having nightmares about the day when he dropped a high ball and Jonathan Davies pounced to score a try with England leading 15-12. The English never recovered from the mistake and Wales went on to win. With his try Davies became the first Welshman since Dicky Ralph in 1913 to score on his debut. 1st February 1986 - Wales 22 Scotland 15, Cardiff Paul Thorburn was almost spirited off to American Football after this game as he landed one of the most famous - and certainly longest - penalties in the history of the game. The prolific Thorburn kicked a goal from 70 yards to stretch Wales' lead. It was a day when Scotland outscored Wales 3-1 on the try count and this ensured the game was a see-saw battle, with the lead changing hands throughout the game. Adrian Hadley grabbed Wales' only try, Thorburn kicked five pens and Jonathan Davies chipped in with a drop goal. 15th Feb 1986 - Ireland 12 Wales 19, Dublin This Welsh team, led by Llanelli's David Pickering never knew when it was beaten! They conceded 12 points just after half time but Wales still roared back from 12-4 down to lead 16-12, before Paul Thorburn kicked the last points of the match. Tries from the two Phils, Lewis and Davies, set the Welsh steamroller going while Thorburn was his usual errorless self. Paul Moriarty made his debut. 7th March 1987 - Wales 19 England 12, Cardiff Arms Park This game will be remembered for what went on off the ball as 'The Battle of Cardiff' raged. Four England players were banned after an RFU investigation but Wales won on the pitch, prop Stuart Evans barging over for the only try of the game. The rest of the points came from Mark Wyatt's boot. 18th Jun 1987 - (WC) Australia 21 Wales 22, Rotorua Welsh victories against Australia are few and far between and Wales haven't recorded one since this unforgettable World Cup clash in New Zealand, which took them to third place. Wales staged the late, late show to win the game, trailing 21-16 going into the final minute. Adrian Hadley was their try saviour with Paul Thorburn landing a touchline conversion to seal the win. Gareth Roberts and Paul Moriarty had contributed earlier tries. 6th Feb 1988 - England 3 Wales 11, Twickenham Wales' last victory at Twickenham came on the day when Wales selected four outside-halves (Bleddyn Bowen, Mark Ring, Tony Clement and Jonathan Davies) in a back line that produced two tries for wing Adrian Hadley. A year after the infamous battle of Cardiff the game also saw a drop goal from Davies on a day that will live long in the memories of Welsh rugby fans. BONUS GAME: 20th Feb 1988 - Wales 25 Scotland 20, Cardiff Arms Park A great comeback from the Welsh sealed this Cardiff victory, a year after Scotland had won in Murrayfield. Scotland sprinted into a 20-10 lead before Wales pulled them back to 20-19, only for Jonathan Davies to kick two drop goals and his side to victory. The Welsh comeback included two superb tries - one from Davies outsprinting Derek White and the other from Ieuan Evans, which many believe was his best in a Welsh jersey.
