The Marx Brothers story begins in 1884 when their mother Minnie, a German immigrant then aged 20, married their father Simon Sam Marx, aged 23, who had moved to New York from Alsace, France. The Cocoanuts, a Broadway show which became their first film, was soon to follow. Like Animal Crackers, this show was originally written for the stage, and the filmed versions were broadly based on the stage productions. Stage performances gave them the opportunity to test the material in front of an audience allowing them to perfect scripts and timing, a ritual they repeated when filming A Night at the Opera. From 1929 they concentrated on filming, making 13 films. They appeared as The Four Marx Brothers (Chico, Harpo, Groucho and Zeppo), before Zeppo left the movie business following Duck Soup.
